Mary Anderson
Mary has been involved with various aspects of prostate cancer patient care, outreach, research, education, and support since 1996. Daughter of the Prostate Cancer Coalition of North Carolina’s late Founder, Robert (Bob) J. Anderson, her passion for the cause stems from working with and caring for her father who died of prostate cancer and evolved through her desire to improve the odds of survival and improved treatment circumstances for men living with prostate cancer and their families as well as for future generations. She is a founding member of the PCCNC (established March 21, 2001) aiding in its formation and development. In her tenure as Executive Director she has expanded its statewide network of prostate cancer patient support, reaching into every major region of North Carolina. Mary is responsible for numerous benchmark programs such as PCCNC Prostate Cancer Screening Guidelines, Partners Program, and Newly Diagnosed Patient Tutorial.
She has served as a Pilot Site Coordinator for the Center for Disease
Control (CDC) funded UsToo! International Minority and Underserved
Populations Outreach and Awareness Program, Associate Director for numerous Department of Defense CDMRP grants, and currently enjoys applying this wealth of field experience within a community cancer setting working on a pilot program for prostate cancer care funded by the V Foundation. A graduate of Meredith College, she has also completed the Johns Hopkins Cochrane Collaboration Course on Evidence-based Healthcare and the Duke University Certification Program in Non-profit Management.
As PCCNC’s Executive Director she makes every attempt to collaborate and support the unique vision of virtually every prostate cancer outreach, awareness, screening, and patient support initiative in the state. In 2005 she was awarded the Sword Barer of Excellence Award by the NC Minority Prostate Cancer Awareness Action Team, AKA, the “Action Team” and in 2006 she was awarded the KnowledgeNet award for Family Advocacy and the Barbara Pullen-Smith Public Service Award for her work in minority and underserved communities. Mary currently sits on a number of planning committees including the Steering Committee for the National Alliance of State Prostate Cancer Coalitions, the North Carolina Comprehensive Cancer Program Prostate Cancer Workgroup and the Rex Prostate Cancer Center of Excellence Advisory
Committee.
